The Spiritual Life Continuum

Where do I go from here?

Once you have identified where you are on the Spiritual Life Continuum, what will you do to deepen and mature in faith towards becoming someone who is centered fully on God? Here are some suggestions for you as you seek to grow in your spiritual journey.

  1. Intentionality

Be intentional about your faith. Don’t be passive in your pursuit of spiritual growth. Make plans. Set goals. Seek out resources like books and people who can help you move forward in your spiritual journey.

2. The Bible

Engage with the Bible. Seek to grow in your own understanding of the story that is being told by the Bible. Listen to the quiet voice of the Spirit as you read/listen to the Scriptures. The Bible is not altogether an easy book to understand. Some parts are easier to understand than others. Access resources that can help you better understand what the Bible is saying.

Suggested Resources:

  • Bible Project. Bible Project has created some wonderful videos that help explain context and intended meaning of parts of the Bible that are harder to understand. They even include reading plans that you can follow along and have helpful videos along the way to help you understand what you are reading.

  • The Path. The Path has pulled together key parts of the Bible and stitched them together so as to create an easier pathway through the overall story that the Bible is trying to teach us. After each section there are helpful questions for reflection.

3. Holy Eucharist

Don’t neglect the spiritual feeding of Holy Eucharist. Grow in your understanding of this holy sacrament. Invite the Spirit to open your eyes each week as you receive the body and blood of Christ.

4. Prayer

Take time to pray. Don’t rely on what happens at church. Consider how you might deepen in your own private prayer life. As in any relationship, the relationship grows through time spent in conversation. Seek to develop a daily habit of spending time with God in quiet to pray. And throughout your day, lift up silent prayers as appropriate for what you are facing - quick prayers of gratitude, prayers asking for help or guidance, prayer for others that you see are in need.

Here are some resources for daily prayer:

  • Forward Movement Prayer. This online resource provides different options to help you pray - praying the Daily Office, Daily Scripture readings, etc. Consider getting the app for your phone.

  • Pray As You Go. This 10 minute devotional leads you, the listener, to listen to a Scripture text and then respond in reflection and prayer. Consider getting the app for your phone.

  • Reimagining Examen. This app leads you through an adapted version of the Ignatian exercise of Examen. It guides you to reflect upon your day and consider God’s presence and leading.

5. don’t journey alone

We were not meant to walk the spiritual journey alone! It is vital that you join with others and walk together in the journey of faith.

Consider meeting with Fr. Allen or a trusted friend to talk about your spiritual journey.

Get to know other Christians in ECP by participating in weekly Dinner Fellowship.

Join with others in Weekly Prayer at Procter House.

Take initiative to get below the surface with fellow siblings in Christ and talk about how you are doing spiritually and consider how you can support each other in the journey.
